another Transcribe thing i dont understand

Post by marce »

Hi. Im fighting a little to understand things about Overture. Im not sure if i dont understand how transcribe works or something is bad.

I was working on a score, and i wanted that one of the notes become larger. So i selected it, and went to the menu "Notes>modify", there i scaled the duration to 200%:
Image

first thing surprised me was that nothing happened...the staff dont changed. But after look in the graphic window i figured that the change was not made to the score, only to the midi data:
Image

"Well, i want that the 200% scale become reflected in the score, so that the eight become a quarter" So, i converted the note to raw data:
Image

and then, selecting the quantization button to quarter, i TRANSCRIBE it and...
Image

the note become quantized to a quarter out of the original start time, and all the other notes that WERENT selected also become quantized, their start times were changed in their start times.

What is wrong? im expecting unusual things of the program or people that use it works in other way i dont know? Really i found problems in each thing i want to work with it.

In the Ov4 manual, go to page 46 and look for Changing Duration under Editing Notes in Ch2: Notes and Symbols.

that makes the change duration more simple, Thanks!

BUT, the oddnes of what Overture do when you transcribe is still there, and not related to large notes now, yes that the transcription change ALL the notes positions, not only the one selected. So, if i played the note instead of draw it with the mouse, i have more headaches like this.

I'm not sure what the desired result is for 5/8. Could you send a pic of what you want the measure to look like after the change. That is, construct a second measure using the mouse.

John, i can make the score looks like i want thanks to your tip.
But my point is Why when you Transcrie a SINGLE note, the others notes are moved from their position in the graphic window. so the Transcribe options transform without reason a 5/8 bar in a 6/8, look the graphic:

and that change is not reflected in the score.

When you change the length of a note it is safest to select all notes in the measure and retranscribe.

Otherwise, Overture responds by providing expanded measures (cadenzas) when single notes are individually lengthened and retranscribed, thinking that's what the user wants.

Looking at your latest Graphic window, I think I see what you're trying to do in this measure. You want the notes of the broken chord to last past the next note, as in the long decay of a harp.

For proper notation with the desired sound, I would select all notes I wish to lengthen, and Modify Notes with Legato - Duration - 150%?, and instead of retranscribing, add a 'molto legato' expression to the score.

Otherwise, if you need to have the exact lengths notated in a line of notes that run into (overlap) each other, you will have to notate with multiple voices as mentioned in the manual.

Hi John, thanks your support. Well, the interesting thing is that im getting this expanded measure without change any lenght. Let me explain: Forget the first post about change the duration of the note. Look the "5bars/6bars" screenshot now: the 5bars is the ORIGINAL, unmodified score, transcribed from my keyboard playing. Then i select the note in red, and without any modification of the lenght of it, i transcribe it again, and the result is the "6bars".
Well i was trying to point that the transcribe feature has some not understable way to do things, but im not sure now, i will investigate a little more or change way to do things.
