It's been a while...

Postby Steve Kallman » Tue Mar 08, 2011 7:02 pm

I haven't posted anything to the Demos and Scores section of the forum for quite a while. Mostly, I've been working on a lengthy piece for solo violin and orchestra. I hit a creative brick wall just as I was nearing the end, so I decided I need to learn more about string writing by rendering this piece, "Fantasia On a Theme by Thomas Tallis" by Ralph Vaughan-Williams, for string orchestra within Overture. It took me several months, but I learned a lot.

So, here are the fruits of my labors. Enjoy!

 Damn Steve this is quite a monstrous endeavor!

Elegant and beautiful....and solo sections are always difficult to convey realistically but you used your sound libraries masterfully throughout. May I ask which ones you used?

Anyhow....just wanted to say this was inspiring and thank you for sharing the fruits of your labor...they paid off!

Well done!!! Sometimes I skip the whole piece when the first few measures aren't interesting to my ears, but with this piece, I couldn't. You caught me all the way.

Thanks very much, guys. I'm glad you liked it. The only downside to this experiment is now I have to go back and apply everything I have learned to pieces I've already written. Sigh! More work ahead, I guess.

BTW: The library is Kirk Hunter's Concert Strings II.

All the best,

@Steve Someone over at KVR brought this thread and link to your performance using Kirk Hunter Studios Concert Strings II to my attention. I think you did a really nice job.

I hope it's okay to share your work with others on KVR at Kirk Hunter Studios Group Buy thread; I've included a link below (my post includes a link back to this thread and a credit to you using your full user name here (just let me know if you want me to take it down and I'll do so immediately).

I'm working with Kirk Hunter Studios in running their Group Buy sale, which reached the top discount level of 75% off on Concert Strings II (normally $799 USD now going for $199.75 USD) as well as Concert Brass II, Diamond and Pop/Rock Strings, so I'm always on the lookout for examples of people using the libraries. Here's a link to the thread: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=331086

Additionally, if you (or anyone else here) have a copyright-free or original music using any KHS library (I believe the piece you posted is copyrighted), there's a Customer Demo Contest where you could win Concert Strings II or its value in store credit for kirkhunterstudios.com (clearly, the latter in your case, since you already own it). I'd love to see you considering entering something.

Let me know.

Thanks,
Peter

The recording that I originally made of the Tallis Fantasia was done with the TVEC 2 version of Concert Strings II. Oddly enough, I've been working on a new version using the TVEC 3.1 upgrade to CS II, and I hope to have it done in the next few days or so.

As for any copyright issues, the Tallis Fantasia was written in 1910, and revised in 1919, so I think the copyright's already expired on it.

I'll let you know on the KVR website when it's done.
