Playback Issue

Post by DrLeonard »

Suddenly, when I play (with the spacebar or the button) the red vertical line cursor appears and moves, but the sound lags behind by several beats. How can I recover the normal behavior?

Sometimes Overture gets into a "state" during operation ... and some very bizarre interface issues ensue.

Restarting Overture invariably fixes them.

Have you tried restarting Overture to see if that remedies your sound lag problem?

Thanks. Restarting Overture reduced the lag, but it's still slightly behind the cursor. Is there a setting for this somewhere? (I also had lost the sound, so had to restart the PC too.)

I'm no expert on this so cross your fingers and hope....

Go to the AUDIO/MIDI menu and then choose AUDIO SETTINGS

This will open a little windows (SORRY I assumed!!! you are on Windows)

Look in this window and there are several choices such as AUDIO DEVICE TYPE, OUTPUT..... Look at the bottom one AUDIO BUFFER SIZE try clicking on your setting and choose a SMALLER buffer size.

As I've explained I'm no expert.

What I would suggest is to look at the manual, I find the online help better as I can search it easier, however I haven't used the new PDF help. Use GOOGLE and try to search for the problems you may come across. I have found even a vague request like "slow MIDI play back" returns a lot of info and some is quite novice (in my case IDIOT) friendly.

Are you trying to use Overture to make the music (play want you want and how you want to hear it) or just to put the dots on paper?

Hey there:

Here's a link with a couple of suggested tweaks in last thread.
https://sonicscores.com/forum/viewtopic ... 77&t=20369

This helped me with ASO. To summarize:
  • - change the instrument preload size in Kontact's File/Options/Memory, try 18kB
    - picked up those SSD drives yet?

Thanks, all, I will follow up on these suggestions. Tuba56, so far reducing the audio buffer size (say to 768) hasn't changed the lag. As to what I am using Overture/ASO for (besides composing new work) -- I am hoping to make better Mp3 recordings than what I have been able to make with Score Writer 4.15, by playing the Overture file and recording it using Audacity. (It would be wonderful if some symphony orchestra would ask me to send them parts and a score, but I'm not holding my breath!)

Why don’t you just make a WAV or MP3 or AIFF file from within Overture? Unless you’re going to do some editing after the fact, Overture will produce a clean and decent .wav or .mp3 file.

Thanks, Merv, I didn't see that option in the File/Export dropdown. I finally found it in the Audio/MIDI dropdown and produced an MP3 recording of the Finale of my Symphony No. 2! As a new user of Overture/ASO I am still in a learning curve but people in this forum have been really helpful.

Hi Dr Leonward,
I am running Win10 and find I get latency issues of a beat or more unless I install and select an ASIO driver (asio4all) which fixes it for me.
Cheers

Thanks, crossbow. I didn't have the audio lag until a few days ago, so I think something just went awry. (I am using Windows 7 on a Dell Optiplex 960). Anyway, by restarting the PC I have gotten the lag down to just a beat, not a whole measure. As to an ASIO driver, my sound is not a "card" but built-in sound in the mainboard ("high definition audio device"). When I select ASIO I get no sound.

Hi Dr Leonard,
I have a similar setup - no sound card. You should be able to configure asi4all to use your built in sound device on the asio configuration/setup.

Interesting -- where would I find the ASIO configuration? When I select ASIO in the Audio?MIDI dropdown I get no sound options, and then after reselecting one of the other audio choices I have to restart the PC to get the sound back.

Which ASIO device did you select in the audio settings window?

I have 2 ASIO devices in my setup - Realtek ASIO and ASIO4ALL v2 and I can use either.

If your setup doesn't have an ASIO driver then I would suggest downloading and installing ASIO4ALL. Overture should then detect this and show it in the audio settings device dropdown. There is a button at the bottom of this window for "control panel" which will take you to the ASIO4ALL configuration.

Cheers

I installed the ASIO4all driver but didn't get any sound when selecting it. Right now I am using Windows Audio and the playback lag has disappeared.
