G'Day all, I've just started evaluating Score Writer 5, I like what I see so far, so I have started to enter a score. I hit a problem with bar (measure) 1. I can't get Score Writer to tie the highlighted notes, but if I select slur instead of tie it adds a slur no problem. I select the first note, ctrl click the third note, both are highlighted in red as per attached image. I then click on the tie icon, or select Notes->tie from the menu, nothing happens. As I said if I select slur it works fine. What am I doing wrong? I also did a rectangular selection which highlighted the first 3 notes, and could still only insert a slur, not a tie.

Hi Arthur

You can only tie adjacent notes. That's true for music notation in general and also in Scorewriter/Overture. Not to say there isn't a way to achieve your goal.

It looks like you want the first note to sustain from beat 1up to beat 4. If you want the F to sound at "and" after 2, without interrupting the E note (which would need to be a dotted half) you can place the F in a separate voice. Like this:

Hello. If you just want those three notes as a phrase, use a slur, not a tie.
I don't think Beethoven intended two voices here--the first note is not held past its shown duration.
So use a slur and all will be well.

Thanks for the replies, people.
I should have explained the context, but I was multitasking (not easy for a bloke). Scorster has interpreted it as I did, the F is played over the top of the continuous E. I'm sure that's how I remember hearing it. For many instruments e.g. wind, this is not possible with one voice. It is, however, very common in organ music to sustain a note, often the root of a chord, and play a sequence of notes over it, with the same hand. This particular piece is from Joseph Haydn's Saint Anthony Chorale, and this construct is used quite extensively.

I finally worked out the intent of the phrase must be a slur. If the E was intended to be continued, then E and F would have both been displayed at that point, and I would have been able to tie the E's. Doh!
