It would be very useful to implement the playback of string harmonics.

There are three common types ,
harmonic on the fourth (sounding 2 octaves above the nut note)
harmonic on the fifth (sounding 1 octave + perfect fifth above)
harmonic on the major third (sounding 2 octaves and a major third above)
harmonic on the minor third (sounding 2 octaves + perfect fifth above)

There is a plugin in Sibelius that can do this.
To simplify the notation should be complete with both first and four finger for a quarter harmonic, and so on

The four listed are natural harmonics. These are usually only played on open strings (often indicating what string to use, e.g., sul D), notated at the sounding pitch, with the small hollow circle from the articulations palette placed above the notehead.

The vast majority of artificial harmonics used by the violinist is where the double octave sounds by fingering the note two octaves lower, simultaneously touching the fourth above. This configuration can be played anywhere on a string, but is easier to sound in the lower positions. To notate, write a perfect fourth and change the notehead of the upper note to the small diamond from the notehead palette.

Yes You are correct - the types described here it is natural harmonics , except the fourth harmonic, which i s the most common one for artifical harmonics.

It is however possible to perform artifical harmonics on the fifth , there are examples of this in both violin and contrabass solo repertoire.

It was the playback I was after -
since I have been writing a lot of these (as an engraver) - even with glissando in between -

It may be a very specialised thing but I guess it would be possible to implement automatic playback for this

Violinists can play the artificial harmonic fingered as a 5th, but only in the higher positions. These are uncommon except in the solo literature. Bassists normally play only natural harmonics, as they can't finger a third, fourth, or fifth except possibly in the highest positions; so again, quite uncommon.

Playback would depend on the configuration of the sound source. There really isn't much Dan can do without making a lot of assumptions. Obviously we would want to trigger an actual harmonics patch, not simply play the current patch two octaves higher when encountering an artificial harmonic.

Regular samples with keyswitches that would activate the artificial harmonics (triggering from notes two octaves lower) would be ideal. Short of that, using a separate layer for a dedicated harmonics patch would be feasible. However, if there are both harmonic and regular notes in a given measure, it would probably be cleaner to hide both the regular and harmonic playback layers and use a third, playback disabled, layer for the actual notation.
