General question about loading strings in Kontakt window

Post by Phildo »

Im using Amadeus in Logic Pro.

Just purchased Amadeus and am pleased with the sounds.

A question about workflow:

Lets say I'm writing a song that has three instruments (piano, cello, and english horn). I would normally create three tracks, install an instance of Kontakt on each track, and then load one instrument per instance of Kontact.

I've noticed that it's possible to load more than one instrument into an instance of Kontakt. The questions I have are, (1) why would you do that, and (2) how do you select which of these multiple instruments is playing at any one time?

TIA

Hi,

Yep nice and simple, but a more efficient way could be to load one instance of KONTAKT and load each instrument into that one instance (English Horn = Channel 1, Piano = Channel 2, Cello = Channel 3).

So because you're using Logic it could have different results than how another DAW handles this. When I say results I mean system resource results...CPU, RAM, instrument library streaming... load times, and also what you encounter when you start getting into mixing and production.

People's workflows are obviously highly subjective and usually tied to resource results....some feel it's best to have instruments in their own instance so they can be treated/handled/controlled and produced/mixed more easily (on a one-to-one basis)... and having to navigate, setup, control and mix multiple instruments within KONTAKT can be offputting. Others feel or find that using separate instances of KONTAKT can affect their system resources negatively... and/or are put off by slow load times and the workflow needs of constantly freezing and unfreezing tracks. They also prefer or have become used to working within KONTAKT and saving multis with configurations that can be called up/loaded more quickly. Or they introduce VEPro into their setups to free resources.

I don't use Amadeus but it never struck me as a power-hungry library... so you could be completely fine either way...depending on your machine and what you're doing.

When configuring multiple instruments within one instance of KONTAKT it's typically a universal process across all DAWs...you just need to match the MIDI Channels within whatever DAW you're using to the same channel in KONTAKT.

Instrument 1 = Flute = Channel 1
Instrument 2 = Oboe = Channel 2
Instrument 3 = Clarinet = Channel 3

You can also get into setting up separate Buses and outputs between KONTAKT and whatever DAW.

Not 100% sure if this is what you're asking about but HTH.

Best,
~Dean

This is a really helpful question about organizing multiple instruments in Kontakt within Logic Pro. I like understanding how different workflows can make composing with piano, cello, and English horn more efficient. EaglerCraft
