I own several copies of the Garritan Personal Orchestra (VST) and the Propellerheads Reason ReFill version and they are not the same. The Reason version does not have a contra-bass clarinet though it is in the library and the tuba sample is not the same. The Reason GPO tuba is terrible as if played by a high-school student with a poor embouchure. The damned sample range for the instrument is not even the same! The Refill sample does not go as low as the regular GPO sample does. Some of the orchestral percussion, like the gong, is not the same either.

This is yet another reason (pardon the pun) to commission custom sample sets for commercial use and most likely another "reason" to abandon Reason as a production tool since I'm not doing EDM crap. It is a great pity because, so far, Reason has been a really stable production tool and has a nice GUI but the lack of plug-in support kills it.

I generally love GPO as a great all around library, especially for it's price I don't think it can be beat but, as you noted, there are a couple of "misses". I find the timpani sample very tubby and lacking attack..

I only use the timpani hits from GPO. The rolls I use come from EWQL.

Though Reason is *now* aiming for the EDM (low end) crowd, their timpani sounds better as well. Frankly, I used more of their samples on this last stage project than the GPO, which I will quit using from now on.

For me, it's high-end or none from now on.
