Am I miscounting here?

I had a composition lesson on Monday, in this measure was definitely a sticking point. In attempt to make it eaiser without changing the rhythm, and realizing that I have no objection to "ball" falling on a downbeat, as it's already accented, I tried to break it into two measures of 9/64 and 9/16, but the rests at the end of the measure showed me that that was not a perfect division. I keep trying to recalculate and get the same result. Math was never my strong suit, unfortunately.

If I understand your note values correctly, your measure with the dotted 16th and 32nds (on "cry-stal") is a 9/64 bar. The 9/16 bar works OK -- just remove the notes over the syllable "-ploy" (including what is tied over into the next measure) and replace them with a quarter note, and no left-over rests remain.

Then why does it put a bunch of stuff in the next measure? I've made two attempts to alter this, but it's done stupid things both times, most recently deleting what are currently measures 12 and 13 without being told. It also puts unnecessary rests in the next measure when I try to delete the spillover notes, which is what made me ask if I had counted incorrectly in the first place. Making it easier for the musicians should not mean making things as difficult as possible for the composer to make minor corrections like splitting a measure to make the time signature easier to interpret..
