Error: Access is Denied

Post by gardibolt »

I haven't used Overture for a couple months, and when I tried to use it today, I can input a couple notes but then I get a blue box of "ERROR ACCESS IS DENIED" and I can't close it or do anything except force close the program in Task Manager. I tried reinstalling the most recent version and same result. Using Windows 10. Is there a way to make it function again? Thanks.

The simple question is:

What have you changed in your system, recently?

I got a new computer. There's no way that I see to transfer the license over to the new one.

Hi, g,

I think you just need to install Overture on the new machine and then enter your Overture license key into it when that is asked for at first start.

It doesn't ask me for a license key, and I don't see a place to put one in.

All right, I guess my time with Overture is over. It was fun while it lasted. Anyone have a good music software they can recommend?

After a new install, the first time you run Overture, it will ask you to enter your serial key.

Did you do a new install?

I initially copied it over with PC Mover. I also tried intallling and uninstalling, and it never asks me for a key.

I tried going through regedit and deleting every reference in the registry to Overture 5 and Sonic Scores after uninstalling, but after rebooting and reinstalling it still tells me access is denied. It never gets me to the page to enter the license key. I'm stymied at how to completely get rid of this program so I can do a clean install, short of wiping the entire hard drive. Don just tells me to "Google it." This is the best I came up with after Googling it, and I'm out of ideas.

Hi Mark,

Looks like a bit of frustration going on here huh?

After scrolling through your post, seems like the problem is how you migrated over to the new PC. It's not recognized as a new install. Did you clone/image?

If you're at the point of messing with the registry editor...not really a good sign.

Before suggesting wiping...what does it say in your Sonic Scores account under Manage Serial Key Usage?

Have you checked that out or tried anything with it?

If you haven't, try logging in and have a look to see if maybe removing or swapping something around might trigger a solution for you. Maybe it's assigned incorrectly.

Sounds like you've already tried everything else, but yes, a fresh install should give you the chance to re-register and get going.

Yes, it was cloned.

The license key page has the old computer listed. But I am hesitant to delete that until I get this one working, because then I won't have any working Overture, and as I say there's no opportunity to add a license key on this install.

OK so if I understand correctly, you still have the original computer with Overture up and running on it successfully...and don't want to jeopardize that one.

And on the new computer, you attempted to install a clone of the old one onto it...so technically it is the other computer...on the new computer....which is likely the cause of the issue.

Given the situation and your willingness or not, it sounds like you might have a handful of options...

Which ones are up to you...so in no particular order what I would try is either...

1. Remove the serial, uninstall/reinstall Overture, and attempt to register it again. You essentially have the same install on two different computers. In theory, this option is the easiest and one that should work. There is an entire page and dimension to the program dedicated to the serial key/computer usage...but I understand why you are hesitant, in case something goes wrong.

2. You could test with a completely different computer. No cloning, no nothing...just Install Overture on whatever computer that is and try to register it. See if it takes, and you can add or remove it with "less risk" testing the Manage Serial/Computer Usage.

3. Go back to the original machine, uninstall Overture on it, then clone or image it again (we'll call it "Clone 2"), and then bring that over to the new computer and see if you can install and register Overture. If it didn't work, you could always revert and restore "Clone 1" again as if nothing happened.

4. Clone the new computer you have with Overture (we'll call it "Clone 3") and another without Overture ("Clone 4")...assuming you have new things of value to save (different from "Clone 1"). Wipe it, try installing Overture, and see if it takes and registers. Maybe the new computer ID/Serial usage will show up in the Manage Serial Usage...rather than what you currently have. If it adds the new computer ID (from the wipe), perhaps one of the clones will work this time because you got the new computer ID going. If not, you can always just go back with one of the clones.

There could be some other scenarios to try but... really, option 1 is what in theory should work. I'd hate to be wrong though and you wind up in a worse position than you're already in.

Well, I gave it a shot and un-authorized the old computer. Tried reinstalling on the new and it still does not ask for a license key. Checking the key management page, there are now no licensed installations on my key. It did forget my VST mapping, so that's something. But I don't know how to get it to let me input a license key

So if I understand correctly, you've only unauthorized the old computer and tried reinstalling Overture on the new one?

In other words, the new computer you are wanting to use is still running the original clone from the old computer, yes?

Because that's where I believe your conflict is.

Have you tried to see if you can install a fresh working demo? Then you could theoretically let it run down, and when it expires it could prompt exactly what you need.

https://sonicscores.com/downloads/

That said, just to follow up to the whole cloning thing...you've already found the results of restoring a clone from a computer that has Overture installed and authorized with it onto another computer. You could continue to try by means of restoring a clone without Overture on it and then reinstalling Overture.

Does that make sense?

I am assuming your clones of the old computer can be something like this:

Clone 1 - Original clone that started it all...with a working and authorized version of Overture on it.
Clone 2 - Current state of the old computer. A new clone with the unauthorized version of Overture still installed on it. Presumably also will be a problem.
Clone 3 - Possible clone with the unauthorized version that you will uninstall Overture from and then clone. Might work. Not sure.

So if you're doing the clone thing, I would try to restore a Clone 3 scenario to the new computer, then reinstall Overture and see what happens.

Anyway, before any of that, maybe you can get a working demo running on the new machine?

Sorry if it isn't yet, but let me know if I can help.

OK so I have once again uninstalled Overture, and am downloading and installing the demo. It is reinstalled. I still see no place to put in the license key.
